My First Ever Twitch Stream!
I just wrapped up my first ever stream on Twitch tonight! It was a lot of fun, so I wanted to share what I learned with all of you here! If you want to watch my future streams, you can follow me on Twitch at https://www.twitch.tv/benschoelgaming!
About an hour before I went live, I hopped on a discord call with my buddy John, and we got OBS and all the other miscellaneous streaming software I needed set up and ready to go. It was actually a lot of fun to mess around and figure out different ways we could add special effects to our streams! We even found a way to show off what songs we were playing during the stream on screen!
We finished the rough adjustments just in time to start my stream! I spent the first few minutes chatting with my friends who had shown up for the premiere of my first ever stream, then moved on to the meat of the stream.
It isn’t that interesting for me to just describe what happened, but if you want to get an idea of what happened, just take a look at some clips that the folks watching grabbed on my channel! Basically, I spent some time exploring the more dangerous parts of Minecraft, and chatted with my buddy John.
After I ended the stream, I spent the next few minutes taking mental notes on what went well, and what I probably could’ve done better. Here’s what I gathered.
I’m okay at filling dead air, but I could be better. Also, dead air is something you want to generally avoid when streaming.
I definitely talked more than John, and since we were both streaming, I need to make sure not to monopolize the conversation. I apologized to John after the stream, but he told me that he didn’t really notice it. But I definitely did, and it’s something I definitely need to work on.
I’m good at finding entertaining things to do in-game, I just need to make sure I take the time to plan and prep for what I’m going to do.
And finally, I need to work on my story-telling ability. I’m fine when I’m just describing something cool that happened to me to another person face-to-face, but I find it hard to focus on my story when there’s more than just one thing happening. And when your streaming, you need to learn how to stay focused and on track no matter what.
I think it’s safe to say that while I did pretty well in a lot of areas, there are definitely places to improve, both technically and personally. But, I think I can learn quickly, and I’m in it for the long haul.
My next challenge is going to be learning how to market my content on TikTok, so expect a blog discussing my experience next week. Honestly, this is probably going to be harder than actually streaming!
