I’ve learned a lot this first week. For one, I’ve learned that most of the articles about copywriting actually, get this, are copy trying to sell me something! It was a bit of a chore to find actual relevant information on copywriting that wasn’t just a course teaser. However, after one or two hours of work, I was able to get a pretty good grasp of what copywriting truly is. Here’s what I found.
It can be difficult, especially when reading program advertisements, to figure out exact facts about something. But, from all that I’ve read, copywriting is an amazing field to get into! It’s a career that many people don’t even know exists! And yet people are making serious paychecks doing it!
But I’m a skeptic. Some things are too good to be true. And yet, I was convinced by the raw amount of different websites and people saying that copywriting is the undiscovered gem of the modern workplace. It pays better than a lot of other positions, and offers lots of benefits!
So what is copywriting exactly? Copywriting is creating written content that attempts to sell a product or service to someone! Simple as that. Junk mail and company blogs are good examples of this. Your goal, as a copywriter, is to get customers, simply from what you’ve written, to purchase whatever it is you’re selling. This does definitely seem difficult at first glance. That’s because it is! But you don’t need a fancy college education or years of apprenticeship work to do it. All you need is the ability to write and sell well.
The Stay At Home Job
The idea of spending my life in the office has never been attractive to me. I want to raise a family, and spend Saturdays with my friends! Therein lies another awesome option copywriting provides. Because copywriting is inherently based on deliverables, you have much more freedom to schedule yourself! Ryan Healy (a professional copywriter) talks about this in his interview. He cheerfully mentions how great it can be to spend a Wednesday afternoon with his kids because he knows he can just move that work over to Saturday, and everything still gets done right on time.
This dovetails perfectly into the fact that so many copywriters work from home. It’s the ideal job for it. With the present pandemic in full swing, many companies have already switched some employees to permanent remote work. I personally love working from the comfort of my own house, but for those who do prefer to work in an office, don’t worry. There are still plenty of copywriting jobs that are in office.
What Skills Do I Need?
Like I mentioned earlier, despite what it may seem like, you don’t need that much in the way of formal education to excel at copywriting. All you really need are two skills: the ability to write, and the ability to sell. And the latter is far more important of the two. I am lucky enough to find that I’m a decent writer, and not terrible at sales. But if you do not find yourself in the same boat, fear not! You can absolutely improve in both things! I have! All it takes is practice. Start writing sample blogs selling something you think is cool! That’s what I’ve been doing! Just Do It!
Copywriting is a field that I am deeply interested in pursuing. I have found that I genuinely have fun when I write blog posts and draft emails. Calls to action are something that I naturally do in my writing, and I could get paid to do it? That’s tempting. But the craziest thing about all of this is that just a couple of months ago I really didn’t think that copywriting would be my thing. When I first decided to write some mock-up blog posts for mmhmm, I thought I wouldn’t enjoy it. I was very wrong.
Enter stage deliberate call to action. So, next time you’re thinking about trying something new, but it just doesn’t feel all that interesting, decide carefully what you want to do! I’d encourage you to still try it out, whether it’s sushi or web design. Who knows, you might just end up writing a blog post about it!
