Watch this first to get a quick summary!

For someone who’s angling for a role in marketing, I don’t actually know much about it.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve learned an almost unbelievable amount about all the different roles in a company over the past two months. But when I think of what a marketing role entails, I can’t come up with any specific roles or deliverables. I love learning new things, especially when it directly impacts my future.

So what’s the solution? I could just try to wing it and figure it out on the fly. That might work. Might. Or, I could decide to spend the month of October learning as much as I possibly can about marketing and all the different roles within it.

I am grossly aware of what a wide topic marketing can really be. There’s just so many different positions and skills needed, it’s honestly more than a little daunting.

It’s scary. And scary things are way too easy to blow off, especially if you have an entire month ahead of you. So, to help me fight the never-ending battle against procrastination, I shall share with you now a general outline of what I intend to be learning over the next four weeks. Every week I’ll study one facet of the field and do one project based around it.

Week One

This week is going to be focused on copywriting. I chose to focus on this first because I feel like this is the sect of marketing that I’m the most familiar with. Two months ago I interviewed Ryan Healy, a freelance marketer. So I have a bit of information there, but I always need more. I’ll spend some time this week researching copywriting, and hopefully find another person to interview about it. Then, over the weekend, create my week one project.

Week Two

This week will focus on both social media management and web content writers. This is designed to be very internet-focused. I want to know how to use the world wide web to my advantage when selling products. I’ll also interview a marketer specializing in one or both of these roles. Again, I’ll create a project based around internet marketing over the weekend.

Week Three

Halfway there baby! The third week is going to be centered around marketing analysts and SEO, both things that, at the time of writing, confuse me. I understand that SEO is obviously based entirely on the internet, but it felt like too big of a topic to just throw in week two. Again, the ideal is to interview someone with a great amount of experience in at least one of these two topics. The weekend is reserved for working on my project for the week.

Week Four

The last week will be based around the more managerial positions within marketing, and how those higher levels in a company work. As with all the weeks, I’ll interview someone in a more managerial position in marketing. And this week’s project will definitely be the hardest to come up with, so stay tuned to find out what I decide to do.

(Breakup)

Whooo! There’s a lot ahead of me. This will probably be the busiest month I’ve had in awhile. I’m excited! Expect lots of blogs over the coming weeks! I’ll also be creating a project landing page, so I can present all that I’ve learned, made, and written over this month in one place.

I invite you to follow me this month as I devote a larger amount of my free time than I’m comfortable with, to learning the ins and outs of marketing. I can’t promise everything will go exactly to plan, but I can promise it’ll be a fun ride.
