Watch this first! :)

This week I had the honor of interviewing Mia Liang, an employee at upgrow. Upgrow is a digital marketing agency that specializes in funneling ideal customers towards the businesses they’re partnered with by updating their Search Engine Optimization. When I was asking around for specific people I could interview about marketing, one name that came up the most was Mia Liang’s.

And for good reason!

Mia Liang had a lot to share about SEO and everything that goes along with it. You should definitely watch the video above, but here are some notes.

Going into this interview, I knew next to nothing about SEO, so I asked Mia to give her best one-minute elevator pitch breaking down what SEO really is. She explained that SEO is making it as easy as possible for customers to find your product or service online. This can happen in a variety of ways that she discusses later in the interview.

Title Tags

The first specific we landed on were title tags. Now, I had no idea at the time what title tags were, so when she offhandedly mentioned them, my interest was piqued. Mia informed me that title tags are the little blue links you get when you search something up on Google. The little grey block of text beneath that is the meta-description. When you write these, it’s very much like copywriting, because you need to write something that really catches people’s interests so they click on the link.

Headings

During the course of the interview, there was a significant amount of technical jargon coming from Mia’s side of the screen that I didn’t fully understand. As much as I wanted to ask her about every single specific she mentioned, for time’s sake I had to pick and choose. Several times she mentioned H1, H2, and H3. That stuck out, so I asked her to clarify. It turned out that the H stood for heading. So H1 meant the title heading, H2 and H3 were downgraded headings. The reason headings are so important for SEO marketers is because of crawlers. A crawler is code that scans through content to gauge its relevance. Crawlers pay special attention to headers, so marketers and copywriters need to know how to write super SEO friendly headers.

Software Tools

I was certain that with SEO’s being so technical, there had to be lots of software tools that Mia uses to get her job done to the best of her ability. She mentioned two of her favorites: SEMrush and Ahrefs. SEMrush is an SEO suite, meaning it houses lots of SEO tools underneath their banner. One particular feature they offer is mock crawlers, that’ll sweep a website and gather all the data marketers need into one page. Ahrefs is somewhat similar, but with more of an educational flair, with several courses about SEO and marketing in general within the site.

While these are the main takeaways, I highly recommend watching the video in its entirety to catch everything! We chatted about working from home, moving, and many other really fun and interesting subjects.

You can find Mia Liang on her website mialiang.com, or by searching her name on most social media apps!
